Primities (Video Asia DVD)

Tagline: “Captured by Flesh-Eating Savages”!
Feature number 2 on cheap ass VideoAsia [voodoo-less] ‘Tales of Voodoo’ Volume 2 DVD is a dubbed in English video print with what are these Russian subs?, is ---hold fast people--- a cannibal movie.

While the Cannibal movies are primarily from Italy there are a couple odd entries that are worth a look.
Jess Franco’s “Cannibals” aka “White Cannibal Queen” is interesting with some unintentional laughs, the French outing “Cannibal Terror” is ok if your looking for cheese, and then there is this Indonesian number “Primitif” aka “Savage Terror”, which is the better of the 3. While I have all the cannibal films and love the sub-genre thoroughly, I thought I would start with this obscure lesser known entry.

In the wake of those [god love ‘em] bloody Italians success with Umberto Lenzi’s “Man from Deep River” ‘72, Ruggero Deodato’s “Last Cannibal World” ‘77 and Sergio Martino’s “Mountain of the Cannibal God” ’78 from which a few scenes are copied here. This crusty curiosity jumps on board and follows suite with a pretty tasty entry to the all to small genre. A small expedition hits the Jungle to looking for the existence of primitives hire a tribesman to guide them. So as they venture deeper into the jungle our unfortunate bunch run across a primitive tribe that, like any good cannibal tribe, captures and violates them.

Followed by the usual animal on animal stock footage like a leopard eaten by a alligator, a comical snake attack, a little gut munching with most of the violence directed towards animals. If only it had one of those Italian cannibal scores, coz’ a lot of this new wave thing here is lame for the most part. Score, the very low budget, a few bits of unintentional comedy and some cheesy sound effects aside this is a must have for cannibal completest. Others will likely want to move on to something else.

Somebody should really gives this one a proper DVD restoration. VideoAsia, the only region 1 DVD I know of, offers a blurry English dub at about 1.66:1 transferred straight from video with occasional tracking issues. It looks Uncut but I couldn’t swear to it. Besides “Ghost Ninja” on the flipside, Xtras are nowhere to be found. While it’s not the greatest print, it’s worth checking out until something better comes along. Come on Mondo Macabro do your stuff.
