Zombie Holocaust (Shriek Show DVD)

Tagline: “He’s a depraved, homicidal killer...and he makes house calls”!

Hailing from the time when Lucio Fulci’s “Zombie”, Ruggero Deodato’s “Cannibal Holocaust” and Umberto Lenzi’s “Cannibal Ferox” were also glorifying the fine art of sleazy exploitation and [censor hating] gore dished out in a gleefully disgusting manner. Marino Girolami, under the name of Frank Martin, directed this permanent and lovable ‘Classick’ ultra gory splatter blast that combines cannibals and zombies.

Low budget and simply plotted, we have a case where body parts are disappearing at a New York Hospital. So when a man who is part of a flesh eating cult is caught stealing a heart, he jumps out a window and plunges to his death. Ian McCollach, a female doctor Alexandra Delli Colli [who bares it all in a sequence reminiscent of Ursula Andress in Sergio Martino’s “Mountain of the Cannibal God”] and a couple of reporter’s go to a remote island of Kito to uncover the origins of the cult. On the island they enlist the help of Dr. Obrero only to discover that he’s a “medical deviant” engaging in bloody brain transplants to increase mans lifespan, while creating nothing more than zombies out of the cannibal natives. Let’s just say things go badly for our little group.

It’s not the best of both worlds but it is a intriguing oddball and even cheesy mix of cannibal chewing, crusty zombies and of course the gore. Boasting a plethora of gut busting moments as chests are cut open, guts ripped out, impalements, eye gouging, as numerous body violation occur in all there blood draining and spraying glory with f/x by Mauizio Trani. 80’s gorehounds and Italian film fans are sure find some fun here.

It has a number of alternate titles like “Island of the Last Cannibals”, “Queen of the Cannibals”, “La Reginandei del Cannibali”, “Medical Deviate”, and “Zombies unter Kannibalen”. I picked it up years ago on Aquarius Video as under the U.S. title “Dr. Butcher M. D.”; a pan & scan print that was trimmed slightly and re-edited with an out of place intro sequence taken from Roy Frumkes unreleased “Tales That’ll Rip Your Heart Out”, and even replacing the Nico Fidenco score. Frumkes was the U.S. title designer and the first pie in the face zombie in “Dawn of the Dead” ’78 as well as the writer of, and the ‘melted business man’ in “Street Trash” ’87 among other things. But everything is the way it should be on this DVD.

Shriek Show DVD provides a very nice Uncut Anamorphic 1.85:1 Widescreen Transfer with only a Dolby Digital 2.0 Audio track. Also included is a nice little set of Xtras: Still & Poster Gallery, Talent Bios, Interviews with f/x dealer Mauizio Trani and Roy Frumkes, Roy Frumkes Personal Photos, Original Tales That’ll Rip Your Heart out Footage, Zombie Art Gallery, Deleted Scene, Dr. Butcher Theatrical Trailer, German Theatrical Trailer and Trailers for Italian Favorites “Jungle Holocaust”, “Eaten Alive”, “Beyond the Darkness” and “Burial Ground” to chew on.

Still have my old video after all these years. Sadly no poster…yet.
