Zombi 2 (aka Zombie) (Shriek Show 2 Disc DVD)

No red blood splattering zombie-miester could or should be devoid of this absolute carnage classic. Following the success of “Dawn of the Dead” ‘78, Dario Argento’s cut was released in Italy as “Zombi”, and this Lucio Fulci affair was original titled “Zombi 2” to cash in as some kind of sequel---which it is not; this is no way a Dawn… rip-off like so many say it is. No, this is as original and classic as any walking dead film there is. Period.

A unmanned boat of a missing scientist comes floating into a New York harbor in a deserted mysterious state except for a zombie that is killed by investigating police. Tisa Farrow, daughter of the scientist teams with reporter Ian McCulloch to investigate his disappearance. They hire a boat skippered by Al Cliver and Auretta Gay head and to a remote island of Matool that was his last known location. When they arrive they find Dr. Richard Johnson who is trying to determine if voodoo is responsible for causing the recently deceased and the dead to rise.

While it’s a slow starter I’m here to tell you that the glorious undead are up and shambling along to delight us with a smattering of chunk-blower moments of visceral violence; the notorious scene where Olga Karlatos gets 12 inch mammoth sized splinter jammed into her eyeball, the zombie on shark sequence, what’s a Fulci flick without a blood draining throat ripping, exploding heads, gut munching and of course the zombies are some of the highlights in this intoxicating affair.

Giannetto De Rossi is the man in charge of the top-notch f/x and make up. Unlike Romero and Savini, Fulci and Rossi went for a scarier more rotted, long time in the ground look for these zombies. Fabio Frizzi and Giorgio Tucci turn a hypnotic tribal electronic score along with the Maestros signature direction makes this a must for Living Dead enthusiast and fans of Horror-Italiano.

This is it!!!!…I’m not buying this Lucio Fulci carnage classic ever again. Christ I started with Wizard [Fullframe] Video, then Vipco Video a widescreen version with the “Zombie Flesh Eaters” title, on to Anchor Bay Video and Anchor Bay DVD. It has also been released by Blue Underground DVD but I went with Shriek Show 2 Disc DVD 25th Anniversary Special Edition. A stunning transfer that certainly out does the Bays. It’s presented here Fully Uncut Restored, Re-mastered in Anamorphic 2.35:1 Widescreen with 7 audio tracks. 5.1 Digital Surround Sound English & Italian, 2.0 Stereo Sound English & Italian, Mono English & Italian with optional subtitles and a interesting Commentary Track with star Ian McCulloch.

Disc One: Food of the Worms Featurette, a Extensive Photo, Poster and Still Gallery, Original Zombies 2 Trailer
Disc Two: Raising the Dead Featurette, Building a Better Zombie Featurette, An Evening with Dakar Featurette and a Zombie Trailer Reel.

This also comes with a mini replica of the original Italian poster
