Pieces (Grindhouse Releasing DVD)

Tagline: “You don’t have to go to Texas for a chainsaw massacre.”
I first ran across “Pieces” many years ago on Vestron Video and it was somewhere in the first 10 or so videos that started my collection. Several shoddy DVD’s pop up here and there over the years but nothing to get excited about until recently when Grindhouse Releasing unveiled this awesome 2 Disc Unrated Deluxe Edition.

Originally titled “Mil gritos tiene la noche - One Thousand Cries Has the Night” this Spanish/US co-production opens with a ten year old young boy that gives mom a life ending hacking with an axe over a puzzle of a naked woman in 1941. [A head hacking that somewhat rivals the one, also by a kid, in the U.S. produced Video Nasty “Nightmare” ’81 directed by Italian Romano Scavolini.] Jump to the present and we have a nasty overtly sleazy and definitely gory slasher [screenplay by Joe D’Amato] flick about a maniac that making a bloody mess on a college campus---in the who dun’ it tradition---by cutting up young co-eds with a chainsaw. With a cast of shady characters as suspects, American actors Linda Day George is the buxom blond tennis coach and real life husband Christopher George is the detective investigating the crimes. So enjoy plenty of nudity and a heaping helping of 80’s gore with decapitation, dismemberment and such, as the killer spreads the red while constructing a human jig saw puzzle. Throw in the cool very Italian prog/sythn score by Cam and you in for a bloody good time.

On a side note. Christopher George was also in “Grizzly” ‘76, “Day of the Animals” ‘77, City of the Living Dead” ‘80, “Graduation Day” ‘81 and was paired with wife Linda one last time in “Mortuary” ‘83 before dying of a heart attack at age 52 the same year. It’s also worth mentioning that director Juan Piquer Simón also helmed the highly entertaining 80’s gore treat “Slugs: The Movie” found on Anchor Bay DVD and co-directed the sleazy satanic flick “Escalofrio” you can find on Mondo Macabro DVD under the title “Satan’s Blood”.
Like the 2 Disc 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition of the firm favorite “Cannibal Holocaust”, Grindhouse Releasing has done a stellar job with this one. The new hi-definition digital restored uncensored print looks fantastic and is properly framed at 1:85.1. Colors are sharp and the sound is crisp making this a must have for fans and collectors. I couldn’t be happier as this is easily one of my favorite slasher flicks.

Xtras:
Disc One: Standard English version with Cam soundtrack, the Spanish version with the original score by Librado Pastor and the option of the "Vine Theater Experience" with a crowd.
Disc Two: Never before seen in depth interview with director Juan Piquer and genre superstar Paul Smith, Gallery of stills & poster art, Liner notes by horror journalist Chas. Balun, as well as ester eggs to seek out and find.
Also included is a hella cool 11” x 14 “ mini replica of the American poster. Being a poster collector I would love to get my hands on a 1 sheet but they are very hard to come by.
