The Living Dead At Manchester Morgue (Blue Underground 2 Disc DVD)

Often overlooked and one of the first zombie films to follow Romero's trend setting "Night of the Living Dead" '68, this Spanish Italian co-production---original Spanish title "No profanar el sueño de los muertos "---is one of those films that saw numerous titles like "Breakfast at the Manchester Morgue", "Let Sleeping Corpses Lie" and "Don't Open the Window" to name a few.

After a chance meeting, George [Ray Lovelock] and Edna [Cristina Galbó], travel to a small town in Manchester where an Architectural team out to destroy insects and parasites has managed to raise the recently deceased in the process. At the same time our hippie-esque duo are pursed by a relentless hard ball detective [Arthur Kennedy and his unforgettable voice] who's convinced they, along with Edna's heroin addicted sister, are involved in a string of gruesome murders. Meanwhile `horror hungry viewers' know that is the work of the undead. This all leads to a showdown at the Manchester Morgue where zombies are hungry for warm human flesh.

A little slow by today's standards with most of the goodies in the latter half of the film. But there is a fair amount of violence and gore courtesy of Lucano Bird, Juan Antonio Balandín, Giannetto De Rossi f/x including its two most infamous CUT scenes involving the disembowelment of a policeman and a nurse that has her breast ripped off. It's a real gem for zombie fans with its rich Francisco Sempere photography, Giuliano Sorgini's fantastic unnerving creepy dark ambient score, the old decaying gothic cemetery, thick atmosphere and the stunning countryside. All wrapped up with an underlying theme of pollution, hippies, and police brutality under the expert direction of Jorge Grau. Unfortunately Grau only directed one other horror film. The very obscure Elizabeth Bathory tale "Ceremonia Sangrient Bloody Ceremony" aka "The Female Butcher". The good news is it now has a May 19 DVD release date under the title "Legend of Blood Castle" by Mya Communications.

Notable Arthur Kennedy Dialogue: "You're all the same the lot of you, with your long hair and faggot clothes.Drugs, sex, every sort of filth. And you hate the police don't you"?

Anchor Bay released it on VHS and DVD, and even a [god damn it why don't I have one?] Collector's Tin, under the better known title "Let Sleeping Corpses Lie" and the same print was re-released on Blue Underground DVD.

But in the name of a kickass zombie feature, Blue Underground took it one step further and released this 2 Disc Special Edition that features the UNCUT U.K. print with the slightly different opening title sequence. The picture quality is stunning and properly framed at 1.85:1 and enhanced for widescreen TV's with 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround, Dolby Surround 2.o. and original Mono tracks. I can tell you it looks freakin' awesome on my 56".
